Stills from the VICELAND television series The Wrestlers.

"The Wreslters" is television series that tells the stories of pro wrestlers all around the world. In this particular episode they featured a couple of different wrestling groups; Dramatic Dream Team (DDT), Stardom wrestling and a style of wrestling called Death Match.

I spent four weeks in Tokyo capturing the essence of Japanese wrestling while also showing the extremes and hardship that comes from being in the world of pro wrestling.

Kota Ibushi 飯伏幸太.

Kotais Ibushi a Japanese martial artist and professional wrestler. He started his career with the Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) promotion in 2004 and over the next eleven years became a three-time KO-D Openweight Champion, five-time KO-D Tag Team Champion and a two-time KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Champion

Stardom 株式会社スターダム

Stardom wrestling is an all female wrestling group from Tokyo.

Stardom was founded in September 2010 by former Hyper Visual Fighting Arsion and JD Star promoter Rossy Ogawa, retired wrestler, model and mixed martial artist Fuka Kakimoto and veteran professional wrestler Nanae Takahashi.

Stardom's in-ring style takes influence from mixed martial arts with many workers relying on kicks as the main part of their offense.

Death Match wrestling.

"Death Match" or "Hardcore wrestling" is a form of professional wrestling where disqualifications, count-outs, and all other different rules do not apply. Taking place in usual or unusual environments, hardcore wrestling matches allow the use of numerous items, including ladders, tables, chairs, thumbtacks, barbed wire, light tubes, shovels, baseball bats, golf clubs, hammers, axes, chains, crowbars, wrenches, tongs, and other improvised weapons used as foreign objects.

Takeshita Konosuke 竹下 幸之介 .

Takeshita Konosuke is a Japanese professional wrestler who has worked for DDT Pro-Wrestling since his debut in August 2012. Dubbed the "Future of DDT", Takeshita was named the Rookie of the Year by Tokyo Sports in 2013. He is the youngest KO-D Openweight Champion in history, having won the title on his 21st birthday.

Dramatic Dream Team. DDTプロレスリング

DDT is a Japanese professional wrestling team founded in 1997 by Sanshiro Takagi.

DDT's matches tend to be a mixture of Japanese lucharesu (a mix oflucha libre and traditional puroresu), worked shoot-style, hardcore brawling and comedy matches. DDT is in many ways a parody of American pro wrestling, particularly WWE, using over-the-top gimmicks as well as unique match types including a hardcore match.
